Re: Buskers Union ??
Sat, November 8, 2008 - 7:46 PMBuskers unions have formed and failed in the US a number of times. Several reasons for this:
1. Laws and regs and how they are enforced vary in every village, city, county, and state. What's a big deal here is not an issue there. What's expected and routine here has never been done/approved/legal there. (In England, though not in the UK, the law is pretty much the same everywhere, and what matters most is local tradition.)
2. We 'Merkins are not a very responsible people. There are many reasons for this, but it means that we don't feel committed to anything much beyond our freedom to choose what to be committed to today. (See above on tradition.)
3. We are consumers, not creators. Followers, not supporters. We have "brand" loyalty. When a new thing happens, if "everybody" is flocking to it, we're there too.
4. Because we do not recognize class difference, we are continually blindsided and made helpless by propaganda that uses class distinctions effectively.
5. Because we are a-historical and believe that only our personal moment, now, in this space and time is significant, we do not learn from history or experience, even our own.
6. Because we have no knowledge of art in any field not shown on youtube or TV, we can't judge our own work or that of others, and have no standards for improvement or refinement other than what a given audience responds to positively.
The changes necessary for a busker's union to thrive in the US would require a basic change in the culture and in our relation to other cultures, e.g., we'd have to become an ex-Imperium, and accept it; or we'd have to be conquered, economically if not militarily; or . . . but none of this will happen very soon, maybe.

How do we get this ball a-rollin'? -

Mon, December 22, 2008 - 4:26 AMby asking about a union, you've just made some lamer's documentary...
www.buskingthesystem.com
they search through every website out there for info...
when you give it to them, they try to use it against you for filler
it happens to me several times a year...

Re: Buskers Union ??
Mon, December 22, 2008 - 11:56 PMAs far as I can tell, the purpose of the so-called buskers union in the UK is to coordinate busking events. It seems more of a guild than a union, imo. I don't need to pay dues to participate in an event; I participate freely all the time and if I don't believe or support (or just don't feel like attending) a given event I'm free to not participate.
The basic goal of a union is bargaining power in favor of the worker/employee and the ability to lobby via the strength to withhold a service. Since buskers are essentially independent contractors working for tips (sans the benefit of any type of employer) I don't see the point. What strength would buskers gain and against whom? "that's it, shoppers of Union Square, all of the statue performers, street musicians, and balloon animal artists are going to strike for higher tips". Buskers are not just performers, they are salespeople. The ability to gain the tips is as much in the charisma as it is in the talent.
BTW, Eric: your cute 'n sassy diatribe against the US had all the charm and relevance of a second semester college freshman spewing out recently realized injustices about animal cruelty at a family reunion BBQ.
